The resort's own Watersports Centre is a recognised training centre for both the Royal Yachting Association and British Water Ski and Wakeboard. Choose from stand-up paddle-boarding (SUP), kayaking and canoeing, sailing lessons and dinghy hire, wakeboarding or simply hire a self-drive motorboat and potter between bays. For a safe introduction to cold lake swimming, opt for a guided open-water swim with a qualified swim guide.

Off the water, the fells are on the doorstep: Wansfell Pike and the Fairfield Horseshoe are a short hop from Ambleside, and Brockhole visitor centre, with its adventure playground, is a few minutes up the road for younger kids.

The spa is the reason many people come back. Outside there's an infinity-edge pool, hot tubs and a wood-fired sauna, all angled at the lake and fells, plus a Fell View Lounge. Inside you'll find steam, sauna and treatment rooms. Packages pair a lake session with a thermal journey such as a morning paddle followed by a three-hour spa slot.

The resort is family-run and big enough to suit everyone: standard house rooms, lake-view rooms, suites, and the adults-only Winander Club wing for couples. There are two main restaurants, including Blue Smoke on the Bay with its wood-fired cooking.

It's a rare Lakes hotel that works equally well for a family water-sports adventure and a couples' spa weekend.
